About the 5.45×39 Cartridge

Development of the Cartridge

The 5.45×39 mm cartridge was introduced by the Soviet Union in 1974 as part of a major shift toward lighter, faster, and more controllable infantry ammunition. Developed by a team led by M. Sabelnikov, it was designed specifically for the new AK-74 rifle to replace the older 7.62×39 with something flatter-shooting and easier to control in automatic fire.

The cartridge’s long, slender FMJ projectile and high muzzle velocity provide excellent external ballistics, while its reduced recoil significantly improves accuracy during rapid fire. The original 7N6 loading became famous — and controversial — due to its hollow cavity at the tip and rear-weighted design, which caused dramatic yawing upon impact.

Over the decades, the 5.45×39 has been used in nearly every major post-1970s conflict involving Eastern-bloc forces and remains a standard service round in Russia, Ukraine, and many former Warsaw Pact countries.

The casing is made of authentic lacquered steel, exactly as used in Eastern-bloc military ammunition. The lacquer coating is durable and corrosion-resistant; cleaning should be done gently with a light oil or a cleaner suitable for lacquered surfaces. Avoid abrasives to preserve the finish.
