About the cartridge
Development and History of the Cartridge:
The 5.45×39mm cartridge was developed in the early 1970s by a team of Soviet designers led by M. Sabelnikov. It was created as part of a new generation of ammunition intended to modernize Soviet infantry rifles. The cartridge was introduced in 1974 as the standard ammunition for the new AK-74 rifle, replacing the older 7.62×39.
The designers focused on creating a lightweight, high-velocity round with excellent external ballistics and significantly reduced recoil. The result was a cartridge with a slender, aerodynamically efficient bullet capable of maintaining stability at long distances, while offering far higher controllability during automatic fire.
The original military loading, designated 7N6, became known for its tendency to yaw rapidly after impact due to the hollow cavity in the nose and rear-shifted center of gravity. This contributed to its controversial battlefield reputation. Over time, the cartridge evolved into numerous improved variants, including enhanced penetration and armor-piercing types.
Today, 5.45×39 remains widely used across former Soviet states, Russia, and many global conflict zones, and is also popular among civilian shooters where rifles chambered in this caliber are available.
Who Will Appreciate the Cartridge?
This keychain appeals to enthusiasts of Kalashnikov-pattern rifles, collectors of Soviet and Warsaw Pact memorabilia, military history fans, and anyone who appreciates iconic Eastern-bloc ammunition. The 5.45×39 is closely associated with the AK-74 family, making it a meaningful accessory for hobbyists, reenactors, and firearm lovers worldwide.
Examples of Compatible Weapons:
AK-74, AK-74M, AKS-74U, RPK-74, modernized Russian and Ukrainian rifle variants, and many civilian or sport-oriented AK-platform rifles chambered in 5.45×39.
Keychain Construction and Care:
The keychain loop is lathe-turned from brass and firmly pressed into the base of the casing at the primer position, ensuring complete waterproofness. This makes the construction more durable and reliable than typical glued alternatives.
The casing is made from original military lacquered steel, common for Eastern-bloc ammunition. The lacquered surface is durable and corrosion-resistant. It can be maintained by wiping with a gentle cleaner or a light oil suitable for lacquered surfaces.
