About the .44 Special Smith & Wesson Cartridge

History & Development:
The .44 Smith & Wesson Special, commonly known as .44 Special, was introduced in 1907 as an upgrade to the earlier .44 Russian round. Developed by Smith & Wesson for their "New Century" revolver, it featured a longer case and higher powder capacity to take full advantage of the then-new smokeless powder.

Though originally offering similar performance to its predecessor, shooters soon discovered the cartridge’s true potential—renowned for its exceptional accuracy, controllability, and balance, the .44 Special quickly gained a strong following among large-calibre revolver enthusiasts.

Usage & Legacy:
Despite being overshadowed for a time by the more powerful .44 Magnum, the .44 Special has made a strong comeback in recent years.
