About the .44 Special Cartridge

Cartridge Development:

The .44 Smith & Wesson Special, also known as .44 S&W Special or simply .44 Special, was introduced in 1907 by Smith & Wesson as a smokeless powder cartridge for their new New Century revolver. Based on the .44 Russian, it featured a longer case and greater powder capacity, making it more suitable for the then-new smokeless powder technology.

While originally designed to deliver similar ballistics to the .44 Russian, enthusiasts quickly saw its untapped potential. The .44 Special gained a reputation for excellent accuracy and smooth shooting characteristics, especially in large-caliber revolvers.

Cartridge Composition and Manufacture:

The .44 Special features a rimmed, straight-walled brass case and typically uses large pistol primers. It has been loaded with a variety of bullet types and weights over the decades, with common factory loads including 200–250 grain bullets.

Although briefly overshadowed by the .44 Magnum, the .44 Special has made a strong comeback among shooters who appreciate its manageable recoil, reliable performance, and historical charm.
