About the .22 Hornet Cartridge

Development of the Cartridge

The .22 Hornet (5.6×36mmR) is one of the earliest centerfire varmint cartridges, developed in the United States during the 1920s with contributions from Townsend Whelen and G. L. Wotkyns. Officially introduced in 1930, it quickly became a favorite among hunters thanks to its high velocity, low recoil, and excellent accuracy.

Compared to rimfire rounds like .22 WMR or .17 HMR, the .22 Hornet delivers higher speeds, can use heavier bullets, and—being a centerfire cartridge—is fully reloadable. This makes it versatile for both hunting and sport shooting.

Historically, the .22 Hornet was also used in military survival rifles such as the M4 Survival Rifle, the M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon, and the AR-5/MA-1. Several improved wildcat versions, such as the .22 K-Hornet and Ackley Improved, later pushed the performance well beyond factory specifications.

Performance and Use

Factory ammunition typically uses bullets between 34 and 55 grains, often in hollow-point or soft-point designs. The cartridge excels in hunting small to medium game—foxes, rabbits, groundbirds, turkey, and various varmints—typically within 150 meters.

Due to its accuracy and minimal recoil, it remains popular among shooters who appreciate precision without the harshness of larger calibers.

About the Pendant

Who is this pendant for?

This necklace is ideal for hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, varmint shooters, and anyone who appreciates subtle but meaningful accessories. Compared to larger revolver calibers, the .22 Hornet offers a more refined, minimalist aesthetic while still carrying the spirit of a classic and historically important cartridge.

Its elegant, compact silhouette makes it suitable for both everyday wear and as a standout piece layered over outdoor clothing. It also makes an excellent gift for collectors, motorists, survival fans, or anyone drawn to unique ammunition-based jewelry.

Compatible Firearms

Common platforms chambered in .22 Hornet include rifles from Winchester, Ruger, CZ, Savage, and Thompson/Center (Contender). The cartridge also appeared in several military survival rifles such as the M4 Survival Rifle, M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon, and AR-5/MA-1.

Construction and Care

The pendant’s loop is precision-turned from brass and pressed firmly into the base of the casing at the primer pocket, ensuring complete waterproofing and far greater durability than glued alternatives.

Brass components can be polished with a product such as Sidol.
If the casing has a patina or custom surface treatment, follow the care instructions suitable for that specific finish.
